How to Choose a Wildlife Control Company: A Homeowner's Guide
When you have an animal problem, you are vulnerable. You want the problem gone fast. Unfortunately, the “critter control” industry has many unlicensed operators who use inhumane methods or do partial work. Here is how to vet a company to ensure you are getting a professional solution.
1. Are They Licensed and Insured?
- License: Wildlife control requires a specific state license (nuisance wildlife control operator), which is different from a regular pest control (bug) license. Ask to see it.
- Insurance: They will be climbing on your roof. Ensure they carry General Liability and Workers’ Comp insurance to protect you if they fall or damage your property.
2. Do They Offer a Warranty?
A company that only traps animals cannot offer a warranty because new animals will come back.

3. What is Their Inspection Process?
Beware of companies that give a quote over the phone without seeing the house.

4. Ask About “Humane” Methods
Ask specifically: “What happens to the animal?” and “Do you check for babies?”
- Red Flag: If they don’t check for babies in the spring, or if they use kill traps as a first resort for raccoons.
5. Do They Repair the Damage?
Catching the animal is only 50% of the job. If the company catches the raccoon but leaves the hole in the roof, they haven’t helped you. Look for a full-service company that performs carpentry and restoration.
