Clogged Gutters: A Welcome Mat for Wildlife
HWCS Expert Team
It’s a chore everyone hates: cleaning the gutters. But skipping this maintenance task doesn’t just risk water in your basement; it invites animals into your attic.
The Rot Process
- Debris Accumulates: Leaves and twigs fill the gutter.
- Water Trap: Rainwater cannot drain. It sits in the gutter, wicking up into the wooden fascia board and roof decking behind it.
- Soft Wood: Over time, the wood rots and becomes soft and spongy.
The Wildlife Connection
Raccoons and squirrels are experts at finding weak spots.
- Raccoons: A raccoon cannot chew through solid oak, but it can easily tear through rotted pine. If they find a soft fascia board, they will rip it open to gain access to the dry, warm attic.
- Squirrels: Squirrels will gnaw at the softened wood to widen gaps between the gutter and the roof.
The Gutter Solution
- Clean Regularly: Twice a year (Spring and Fall).
- Install Gutter Guards: High-quality guards prevent debris buildup while letting water flow. This keeps the wood dry and hard.
- Inspect Fascia: If you see peeling paint or dark spots on the wood behind your gutters, probe it with a screwdriver. If it’s soft, it needs to be replaced before winter.
Protect your home’s envelope. Keep your gutters clean to keep the critters out.
